Neuro Opthalmology

What is Neuro Opthalmology?

Neuro-Ophthalmology is a specialized branch of ophthalmology that deals with vision problems related to the nervous system—especially the optic nerve, brain, and eye muscles.

These conditions may not originate in the eyes themselves, but rather in the brain, nerves, or muscles controlling eye function. Neuro-ophthalmologists work at the intersection of neurology and ophthalmology to diagnose and manage these complex disorders.

Causes of Neuro-Ophthalmic Disorders
  • Optic neuritis (inflammation of the optic nerve)

  • Brain tumors or strokes

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)

  • Myasthenia gravis

  • Thyroid eye disease

  • Aneurysms or head trauma

  • Increased intracranial pressure

  • Congenital nerve abnormalities

Treatment

Depends on the underlying cause, and may include:

  • Steroids or immunosuppressants

  • Treatment for associated neurological disorders

  • Vision therapy

  • Surgery in some cases (e.g., for nerve compression or eye movement disorders)

  • Multidisciplinary approach with neurologists and neurosurgeons
